Christmas Day saw Penn State football add to its 2020 recruiting class
Penn State football head coach James Franklin got some good news on Christmas in the form of a class of 2020 commitment. Four-star linebacker Derek Wingo became the second member of Penn State’s 2020 recruiting class.
A native of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Wingo plays at annual powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas. The junior checks in at six-foot-two, 215 pounds — a bit on the small side for a linebacker, but he’s got plenty of time to grow.
Wingo is very athletic and has great speed. Those traits were on display during the state championship game this past fall when he recorded eight tackles and forced a fumble. In another year’s time, Wingo could develop into a very talented linebacker and one of the top recruits at his position.
Not surprisingly, Wingo has an impressive offer sheet from the likes of Ohio State, Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.
Penn State assistant coach Ja’Juan Seider played a huge role in Wingo’s recruitment. Seider has strong connections to the state of Florida and has been a big asset to Franklin’s staff. Defensive coordinator Brent Pry also helped in recruiting Wingo.
Wingo joins offensive lineman Grant Toutant as the current members of Penn State’s 2020 recruiting class.
It’s obviously very early, but if Wingo should indeed sign at Penn State, he could be the next in line at “Linebacker U.”
