Merry Christmas, James Franklin. Four-star linebacker Derek Wingo gave the Nittany Lions coaching staff a Christmas gift on Tuesday, announcing his verbal commitment to Penn State.
Wingo was offered by Penn State in June and quickly put the Nittany Lions among his favorites. He made his first visit to Happy Valley three months later when he was on campus for the Ohio State game.
The WINGO File
- Class: 2020
- Size: 6’2/215 lbs.
- Pos: OLB
- School: St. Thomas Aquinas (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)
- Composite Rating: ★★★★ (.9248)
- Composite Rank: No. 199 overall, No. 10 OLB
Hailing from the revered St. Thomas Aquinas program in Ft. Lauderdale, Wingo was a coveted prospect by virtually every major program in the nation. He held offers from Miami, Ohio State, Florida State, Michigan, Florida, Clemson, Georgia, Oklahoma, and several others. The Buckeyes and hometown Hurricanes were seen as the two other favorites to land the talented junior.
Running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider was again a key player in landing Wingo’s commitment. The Miami native has been Penn State’s primary recruiter in his home state since joining the staff. Wingo is also a 7-on-7 teammate of recent Nittany Lion signee John Dunmore.
Wingo is viewed as a linebacker at the next level despite playing more of a hybrid role in high school that seems him lining up as a defensive end.
This is Penn State’s second commitment in the 2020 class, with Wingo joining offensive lineman Grant Toutant.
