Cal Football: Bears Land Penn State DB Transfer Isaiah Humphries

Cal added a transfer safety on Sunday when former Penn State freshman Isaiah Humphries announced he will enroll at Berkeley.

Humphries is expected to be available for spring workouts, although he must sit out next season as a transfer. He will have three years’ eligibility beginning in the fall of 2020, when Cal’s depth at defensive back figures to take a hit.

Humphries announced the news on Twitter:

At 6-foot, 186 pounds, Humphries was rated a four-star prospect by 247Sports out of Sachse (TX) High near Dallas. According to Golden Bear report, Humphries had 15 interceptions in his high school varsity career, seven of them as a senior.

He signed with Penn State over offers from Cal, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Mississippi State and Northwestern, among reportedly 20 scholarship opportunities. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Leonard Humphries, who played for the Nittany Lions from 1989-91.

But Humphries saw no action last fall and announced in late November he was leaving the school “in order to grow and not lose the passion that I have for football.”
