Former Penn State safety is transferring to Cal; Zech McPhearson confirms transfer plans: Monday musings

Former Penn State safety Isaiah Humphries is transferring to Cal.

The freshman from Texas did not suit up for the Lions in 2018 and left after just one season. He was a four-star recruit from Sachse, Tex., and the son of former Lion Leonard Humphries. Isaiah Humphries will have to sit out the 2019 season before playing for the PAC-12 school as a redshirt sophomore in 2020.

In other transfer news, corner Zech McPhearson, who will be a redshirt junior in 2019, has announced that he is leaving the school after he graduates this spring. Because he’ll have his degree, he will be free to transfer elsewhere without sitting out a season and then will have two seasons to play at the school of his choice.

McPhearson is one of four Lions who reportedly put their name into the NCAA’s new transfer portal, as he joins receivers Juwan Johnson and Brandon Polk plus corner Lamont Wade. Players do not have to leave if their name goes into the database, but most will end up doing so after assessing their options.

One final Monday morning note: Former PSU quarterback Billy Fessler, who played his high school ball at Erie Cathedral Prep, has joined Joe Moorhead’s Mississippi State staff after spending time as a coach at Slippery Rock.
