After its third straight win, the Marist College men’s basketball team has a chance to accomplish something it hasn’t done in a decade:
Possess a winning record.
The Red Foxes will visit Colgate on Saturday, Dec. 15, having beaten Stetson 79-75 in DeLand, Florida on Saturday. The win over the Hatters evened Marist’s record at 4-4. The Red Foxes haven’t been over .500 at any point since the 2007-08 season.
The Raiders (7-4) enter coming off a 76-65 loss to the Penn State Nittany Lions on Saturday. Still, Colgate boasts potent offensive threats in Jordan Burns, Rapolas Ivanauskas and Will Rayman. Burns entered Saturday having averaged a team-best 17 points per game. Ivanauskas came in averaging 15.3 and Rayman 12.1.
Marist counters with senior guard Brian Parker, who had 16 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals against Stetson. Teammate Isaiah Lamb led the Red Foxes against the Hatters with 18 points and a team-best seven rebounds, while David Knudsen had 11 points and Aleksandar Dozic had 10.
Marist was 28 for 55 from the field, 9 for 20 from downtown and drained 14 of its 20 free-throws against Stetson.
The Red Foxes were ahead 62-47 with 13:32 to play, but Stetson didn’t throw in the proverbial towel and shredded into Marist’s lead. The Hatters cut it to 74-70 with a minute left to play, and 46 seconds later trimmed it to 77-75 on a 3-pointer by Kenny Aninye.
Senior wing Ryan Funk then hit two foul shots with four seconds left to seal the win.
The Red Foxes had dominated most of the first half, outscoring the Hatters 43-34. Christiaan Jones led Stetson with 23 points, nine rebounds and three steals. Aninye had 16 points and six assists, and Clay Verk added 11 points. Stetson fell to 2-9.
