After speaking to a few people around the recruitment, I’ve gone ahead and joined 247Sports’ Bill Greene by putting my 247Sports Crystal Ball pick in for Class of 2020 linebacker Derek Wingo to Penn State. The four-star prospect could decide relatively soon despite a recent offer from Florida State.
The 6-foot-2, 210-pound prospect also has offers from Clemson, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma and others.
Wingo has a terrific relationship with area recruiter Ja’Juan Seider and defensive coordinator Brent Pry, and he’s a 7-on-7 teammate of recent Penn State signee John Dunmore. Wingo attended the Nittany Lions’ satellite camp stop at Florida International on June 14 and made a trip up to Happy Valley for the White Out game against Ohio State. After the trip, it was clear that the Nittany Lions were in a very good spot.
“Before I got up to Penn State, they were one of my top schools, but I really didn’t know much about them,” Wingo said at the ime. “After all is said and done and having been there for three days, it obviously blew me away.
“They have set the bar very high now for any other school, and my dad feels the same way,” he noted. “I don’t really have a top school, but this could end up being the school I go to.”
At the time, the Nittany Lions wanted to see more out of his junior film to see if he could indeed play linebacker at the next level. Wingo plays a hybrid linebacker/defensive end in high school. He had 42 tackles, 12 tackles for loss and six sacks this season. He concluded his year with eight tackles and a forced fumble against Lakeland in the FHSAA Class 7A State Title game.
Wingo is the No. 199 overall prospect and No. 10 outside linebacker nationally by the 247Sports Composite rankings. He is the No. 31 prospect in the Sunshine State. 247Sports rates Wingo as an 89, three-star prospect and the No. 19 outside linebacker nationally.
