Nittany Lions wrap up regular season against Maryland

Penn State football looks for its ninth win of the regular season against the Maryland Terrapins.

Although some of the high expectations for Penn State football heading into this season haven’t been met, the Nittany Lions still have a chance at racking up nine wins in the regular season and earning a berth in a prestigious bowl. The Maryland Terrapins invade Beaver Stadium this week looking for a win just to become bowl-eligible.

Penn State has hit some obstacles over the last few weeks and heads into the final week of the regular season with eight wins and three losses to Ohio State, Michigan State, and Michigan. Senior quarterback Trace McSorley suffered an injury a few weeks back and has yet to fully recover.

The Nittany Lions really struggled on offense last week and managed just 20 points against a bad Rutgers team. Fortunately for the Nittany Lions, the defense continued to improve and put together a strong performance to hold the Scarlet Knights to just seven points and less than 250 total yards.

Maryland, on the other hand, had a fantastic game at home last week, but came up just short against Ohio State. The Terrapins led for much of the game, but failed on a two-point conversion attempt in overtime that wold have given them the victory.

It’s been a tough season to say the least at Maryland. From the tragic event during summer workouts, to the controversy surrounding the involvement of former coach D.J. Durkin. The Terps started the season with a big upset win over Texas, but struggled once the Big Ten portion of the schedule began.

Although Penn State will be favored over Maryland, particularly at home, the Terps certainly can’t be overlooked. They played an inspired game last week and will be ready to do the same this week as they look for that all-important sixth win.

Penn State has dominated the overall series against Maryland, posting a record of 38-2-1. Maryland’s last win at Beaver Stadium came back in 2014.

Kickoff between the Nittany Lions and the Terrapins is set for 3:30 p.m. and will be aired on ABC.
