Penn State Football Recruiting Roundup: Big weekend for PSU

Will Penn State football recruiting benefit from several big visits over the weekend

This weekend proved to be a big one for Penn State football recruiting, between visits, a de-commitment and other news. Let’s take a look at what’s going on in the Nittany Lions recruiting world.

Three-star WR Decommits From Penn State

One of the members of the 2019 Penn State football recruiting class decommitted this weekend. Three-star wide receiver Emery Simmons (South View HS, Hope Mills, NC) announced that he will no longer be part of the stellar 2019 recruiting class.

Simmons has flipped to UNC, where he’ll play under new head coach Mack Brown.

He originally committed to play for Indiana, flipped to UNC, switched to Penn State and now is with the Tar Heels. Talk about a roller coaster recruitment. Ultimately, Simmons is committing where he feels most comfortable, and fans can respect that.

The 2019 class will need to address the wide receiver position. John Dunmore (Chaminade Madonna HS, Hollywood, Fla.) is the only receiver currently committed.

Recruits Flock To Happy Valley

A group of committed and uncommitted recruits visited PSU this past weekend. Top committed names include five-star linebacker Brandon Smith, four-star running back Devyn Ford and four-star OG Caedan Wallace.

A number of uncommitted recruits took visits this weekend, too. Wide receiver, and Connecticut Gatorade Player of The Year, Cornelius Johnson was in attendance. Penn State football recruiting will shift a lot of energy towards Johnson with the loss of Emery Simmons.

Uncommitted three-star defensive tackle Jared Harrison-Hunte made the trip to Happy Valley. The six-foot-four, 286-pound New York native is a favorite to commit to Penn State, according to 247Sports.com’s Crystal Ball projection.

Early Signing Day

December 19, 2018 is a day to look forward to for Penn State football recruiting. The following committed recruits have stated that they intend to sign that day during the Early National Signing Day Period, and enroll early at PSU:

LB Brandon Smith
LB Lance Dixon
S Tyler Rudolph
QB Michael Johnson Jr.
QB Taquan Roberson
CB Keaton Ellis
CB Marquis Wilson
OL Anthony Whigan
TE Brenton Strange

Out of that group, it will be interesting to see the linebackers, Smith and Dixon, form chemistry with the current group on the roster. Penn State fans are excited for the return of Linebacker U, after Micah Parsons had a monster freshman year.
