Penn State Football Redshirt Report: Elevated Playing Time for Jahan Dotson, Micah Parsons and Other Freshmen

Redshirt Burned/Green (8)

K Rafael Checa

Checa missed the Michigan game with an injury but returned to action against Wisconsin. The Maryland native posted a season low in touchbacks (one on six attempts) but that may have just been due to the extreme wind that blew threw Beaver Stadium throughout Saturday’s game.

TE Pat Freiermuth

Another game, another quality week for Freiermuth who had three receptions for 34 yards against Wisconsin. He ranks third on the team in both receptions and receiving yards with 19 receptions for 256 yards.

LB Jesse Luketa

Luketa saw playing time against the Badgers but failed to record a tackle. He has six tackles on the year entering the final two weeks of the season.

LB Micah Parsons

Say it with me, “Micah Parsons should be a starting linebacker.” Once again, Parsons has showed growth at linebacker after making the move from defensive end. The former five-star racked up a team-high seven tackles. He leads the team with 58 tackles.

K Jake Pinegar

The coaching staff has put Pinegar in questionable situations multiple times this season and that once again happened against Wisconsin. The Iowa native went 3-for-5 on the day but missed a 45-yard attempt and had a 43-yard attempt blocked by the Badgers. He’s hitting 70 percent of his field goals this season, making 12 of 18.

DT PJ Mustipher

Mustipher saw more playing time than usual against Wisconsin and recorded two tackles in the along the way.

RB Ricky Slade

For the first time in a long time, Ricky Slade saw the field. The former five-star running back saw two carries and picked up 1 yard. It hasn’t been the season that many expected from Slade but perhaps the Virginia native can get it going in these final two regular season games.

WR Jahan Dotson

Dotson appears to be on the verge of a breakout game if given the opportunities. The Pennsylvania native lead the team in receiving yards against Wisconsin with 39 and once again made a tremendous catch for a crucial first down. Through a handful of games, everything about Dotson yells “DaeSean Hamilton 2.0”.

Yellow (3)

DE Jayson Oweh/DE Nick Tarburton

Oweh and Tarburton were once again missing in action against Wisconsin. Perhaps we’ll seen one or the other, both of the remaining games could present opportunities for the two defensive ends.

WR Justin Shorter

The former top-ranked wide receiver in the country finally saw playing time again after only appearing against Kent State earlier this season. Shorter made his first-career reception against the Badgers and saw a good amount of playing time overall.

Red (4)

OT Rasheed Walker

Walker hasn’t seen the field since his brush up with the law but at the same time, there hasn’t been any real chances for him to play either. He could, however, get the opportunity against Rutgers and Maryland.

TE Zack Kuntz

The future is bright with Kuntz and I believe there’s a solid chance he may get some playing time against Rutgers and Maryland. Either way, everything about the Camp Hill (PA) native screams that he’ll be a star tight-end.

WR Daniel George

George has two games left to play before he burns his redshirt. He’ll potentially get into one of these next two games and most likely the bowl game.

CB Trent Gordon

Minus his one special teams appearance this season, Gordon hasn’t sniffed the field this season. He has a bright future but patience will be required.

The Real Reds (7)

These remaining seven players have not seen playing time this season and the chances seem slim-to-none that they will over the next few weeks.

QB Will Levis

OG Bryce Effner

OG Juice Scruggs

DT Aeneas Hawkins

DT Judge Culpepper

LB Charlie Katshir
