Penn State recruiting target inspired by TE success; where Lions rank among best programs ever, and more

Today’s Penn State football news headlines feature a new recruiting target’s thoughts on the Lions offense and a look at where the Lions rank among the best programs of all-time.

Cane Berrong is a 6-4, 220-pound prospect from Hart County (Ga.) High School in the 2021 recruiting class. Fresh off receiving a Penn State offer, he tells Tyler Donohue from Lions247 that the program’s success with Mike Gesicki and Pat Freiermuth has caught his eye.

Penn State ranks No. 9 among the best college football programs of all-time, according to College Football News. That list is based on a formula where programs earn points based on finishes in the Associated Press national rankings.

Here’s what College Football News had to say about Penn State in its rankings:

Joe Paterno established a winning culture in Happy Valley with a winning tenure that’ll never be topped, but much of his legacy was tarnished by how it ended. Bill O’Brien was credited with pulling the program out of its dark time and giving way to James Franklin, who has brought Penn State back into the national conversation. It’ll be interesting to see where the Nittany Lions go from here in 2019 with four-year starting quarterback Trace McSorley to rely on in big spots.

In other Penn State football news, defensive tackle commit D’Von Ellis sees a “dangerous combo” with former teammate P.J. Mustipher. Dae’lun Darien will finish his career at Delaware, and five-star 2020 target Bryan Bresee returns to Happy Valley.

PennLive’s Bob Flounders, Greg Pickel and Dustin Hockensmith also talk Penn State football on the Keystone Sports Network. Check out audio from their latest podcast below.
