Penn State had its final dual meet of 2018 last week when Arizona State came to Rec Hall.
While the Nittany Lions dominated the Sun Devils with a final score of 41-3, Mark Hall had a performance that made the night even more exciting for fans.
And for his performance, Hall was named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week, as well as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week. This is Penn State’s first weekly honor of the season.
Ranked No. 2 at the time at 174 pounds, Hall took the mat against No. 1 Zahid Valencia, reigning NCAA Champion and the reason Hall finished second last year at NCAA Championships in Cleveland. The rematch caused a lot of talk and was much anticipated by wrestling fans.
The first period of the bout was scoreless, but Hall was first on the board to start the second after recording an escape. After a takedown in the second, added with 2:41 in riding time, Hall sailed to a 4-0 decision over his biggest competition.
Hall controlled the match and is now 8-0 on the season, and currently ranked No. 1 at 174 pounds according to Intermat and picked up the first weekly honors of any Penn State wrestler this season.
