LEXINGTON, Ky. (WTVQ) – It’s been 20 years, since UK football played in a New Year’s Day bowl.
That was in 1999, when the Kentucky Wildcats lost to Big Ten foe Penn State 26-14 in the Outback Bowl.
However, in today’s Citrus Bowl, the Cats had another chance at the Nittany Lions winning 27-24.
A victory that turned into a party at Tin Roof bar here in Lexington.
Solid Blue fan Wyatt Skaggs says the victory against Penn State is outright legendary.
” When I got here as a freshman, we weren’t the greatest in football, ” said Wyatt.” So it’s nice to see a really good football team that plays really, really well, plus Benny, it’s great to see a guy who was a three-star recruit dominate college football this year and last year.”
All-American running back Benny Snell Jr. dominated opposing defenses this season; leading up to today’s game.
In fact, he became Kentucky’s all-time leading rusher today in the victory over Penn State.
Solid Blue fan Nolan Bunnell says he’s a special talent and will be missed here in Lexington once he departs for the NFL Draft.
” I hate to see him go,” said Bunnell. ” But I think we’ll still be okay.” We still have Terry for another year, Rose is a good guy to come up behind Benny.”
Not only did the Cats win the Citrus Bowl, but it was their fourth time playing on New Year’s Day.
Solid Blue fan Luke Cox says he’s been a fan of UK football his entire life, and gave his perspective on All-American’s Josh Allen and Benny Snell Jr. not returning next season.
” I think we’ve got a good coach,” said Cox. ” I don’t know, I think we’re going to be fine, they’re definitely our leaders right now.” But we got some other guys who can step up, some big play makers.” I think we’ll be alright.”
UK football finished the 2018-19 season with a 10-3 record, which is the first 10-win season since 1977.
With a Citrus Bowl victory, and 10 wins, Solid Blue fans have something to smile about.
