Trussville native Zac Thomas of Appalachian State named Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Year

Appalachian State quarterback Zac Thomas, a Trussville native, was named Sun Belt Conference Offensive Player of the Year on Thursday.

Thomas, a sophomore, led the Mountaineers to the Sun Belt East Division championship in his first year as a starter. Appalachian State (9-2) hosts Louisiana (8-4) for the Sun Belt title on Saturday.

Thomas ranks fifth in the Sun Belt in passing yards per game (178.7) and third in passing efficiency (156.5). He has thrown for 1,787 yards and 18 touchdowns with just four interceptions, in addition to 417 yards and eight scores rushing.

Thomas was also the second-team All-Sun Belt quarterback. In addition, Appalachian State’s Scott Satterfield was named Sun Belt Coach of the Year.

Arkansas State quarterback Justice Hansen was named overall Player of the Year for the second straight season. The fifth-year senior has passed for 3,172 yards and 27 touchdowns and also rushed for 396 yards and six scores for the Red Wolves.

Arkansas State also had the Defensive Player of the Year (defensive lineman Ronheen Bingham, Freshman of the Year (running back Marcel Murray) and Newcomer of the Year (wide receiver Kirk Merritt was Newcomer of the Year).
